Is Pharmacology Difficult Podcast ENZYME INDUCTION CLINICAL RELEVANCES

Listen Later

Welcome to IS PHARMACOLOGY DIFFICULT Podcast ! I am Dr Radhika Vijay, In today's episode, within a twinkling of an eye we will be heading on to the topic of the day i.e. Clinical relevance of Enzyme Induction . For understanding the whole concept better, we need to emphasise three important points i.e. plasma levels of the metabolised drug goes down due to enzyme induction, then if the resulting metabolite is inactive, then also the effect of drug acted upon decreases, and lastly if the metabolite is active, the effect of acted upon drug increases. The examples are given generously, first one is contraceptive failure, secondly effect on oral anticoagulants like warfarin, then comes effect on vit D3 metabolism, next is concept of AUTOINDUCTION and Pharmacokinetic tolerance. Other consequences of enzyme induction, first one is decreased drug effect, especially loss of Nevirapine effect, then another new example is acute intermittent porphyria induction, then I will explain intermittent use of inducer, its effects and how dose adjustments are needed in such a condition, so these were a big list of examples for explaining all in all almost all clinical relevances of enzyme induction. With these wonderful facts , I will be calling today's session to halt, till the next one, do follow me here, stay tuned, do rate and review on ITunes, Apple podcasts, Happy Weekend! Thank you.
