Welcome all to IS PHARMACOLOGY DIFFICULT Podcast ! I am Dr Radhika Vijay, in today's episode, I will talk about further details of Fixed Dose Drug Combinations, actually I will talk about their advantages and disadvantages. To start off, first I want to talk about the advantages of fixed dose formulations, in that first to state is increased convenience and better patient compliance, secondly, fixed dose drug combinations lead to enhanced effect of combination is achieved, more added effect than individual drugs. The side effects are minimised, that's the third benefit of fixed dose drug combination. All these descriptions are accompanied and equipped well with examples. But then the topic is not yet over, I need to talk about the disadvantages of FDCs also. The first one is that dose of individual drug cannot be adjusted, secondly if pharmacokinetic properties of drug do not match, there will be large fluctuations in plasma concentration of drugs. Third, you cannot identify individual effect of a drug in a formulation, it is difficult to trace it, whether its a benefit or an adverse drug effect, so take my advice and act sensibly. Therapeutically I would state that FDCs should be prescribed till you need all the drugs in a formulation and secondly the pharmacokinetic properties of individual drugs should match, there should not be much differences in them, so accordingly you have to judge whether or not you really need to go for FDCs or not, take the decision right and attentively, till next episode, do follow me here, stay tuned, do rate and review on ITunes, Apple podcasts, thank you!!
