Welcome all to IS PHARMACOLOGY DIFFICULT Podcast ! I am Dr Radhika Vijay, in today's episode, I wanna converse about enzymes, almost all biological actions are carried out under catalytic influence of enzymes. Hence enzymes are important targets of drug action. Drugs can increase or decrease rate of enzymatically mediated reactions. Enzyme stimulation is relevant to only few natural metabolites, not for foreign substances acting as drugs. This is accompanied with a solid classical examples. Stimulation of enzyme increases affinity for substrate and this in turn lowers rate constant i.e. kM, Apparent increase in enzyme activity can also occur by enzyme induction which is synthesis of more enzyme protein, but its not the same as enzyme stimulation as in this case, kM remains unchanged. Next I will talk about is Enzyme Inhibition. Some chemicals denature proteins and inhibit enzyme non selectively. Such inhibition can be Competitive and Non competitive. Competitive is Equilibrium type, in this case product is not formed, or if formed its non functional, in this kM increases, but Vmax stays unchanged. I will clarify some more associated facts and indications of this type of inhibition. Some good examples will be listed in a tabular form. With all this and whole bulk of knowledge blasts, I will finally call it for a day, till next episode, do follow me here, stay tuned, do rate and review on Itunes, Apple podcasts, have a great start of weekend, thank you!!
