Is Professionalism Anti-Black?

Let's face it, corporate America has a deep-seated racism problem. Look at all the coverage around the Google employee who was fired after his memo was leaked and he revealed that he thought women were less "neurotic" than men. That's a solid example of how people within the industry view their employees and it shows that there is some serious racism within the industry.

There is an ongoing debate that Black women should be more professional. You see this in the work force, in the classroom, and in social settings. But is professionalism anti-black or is professionalism what is keeping non-white people out? 

The issue of professionalism and race is one that comes up over and over again, but in ways that are not often considered. Here I will try to do that. We need to ask the question, does professionalism push out black people?

A professor from Harvard Business School recently wrote an op-ed in the Financial Times about how professional attire keeps women out of the workplace. The op-ed was published just a few days after the Oscars when many white celebrities and politicians wore black to protest the lack of diversity in Hollywood. I will compare the two instances, and look at the argument that professionalism is inherently anti-black.
