In 2018 an article was published by Buzzfeed that connected the dots from QAnon to an old book about a shadowy figure called Q that leaked government information. On 4chan, users declared that it was all part of a leftist prank and that QAnon was run by the same group who wrote this old book. The idea was to fool MAGA followers into thinking Q was real.
