Publisher's Summary:
Is Shakespeare Dead? is a short, semi-autobiographical work by American humorist Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain. It explores the controversy over the authorship of the Shakespearean literary canon via satire, anecdote, and extensive quotation of contemporary authors on the subject. The original publication spans only 150 pages, and the formatting leaves roughly half of each page blank. The spine is thread bound. It was published in April of 1909 by Harper & Brothers, 12 months before Mark Twain's death.
In the book, Clemens clearly states his opinion that Shakespeare of Stratford was not the author of the canon, and lends tentative support to the Baconians. The book opens with a scene from his early adulthood, where he was trained to be a steamboat pilot by an elder who often argued with him over the controversy. (Quote from wikipedia.org)

Clever & witty
This is a clever and witty essay compiling evidence that the Stratford Shakespeare did not write the works of the great Shakespeare. Twain also recounts suppositions & inferences which make Sir Francis Bacon the likely author. This argument continues today. The last time I paid any attention to it, I believe the Baconians had been routed. Or maybe it was the other way around. Neither eventuality alters the fact that the works of Shakespeare are a strong competitor for the title of the world's greatest literature. If I could have only two books one would be the Bible and the other The Complete Works of Shakespeare. As an aside, in this essay Twain reveals his disbelief in both Satan & perdition.
yet is ascribed to have written some of the most profoundly excellent English literature
I have this in kindle and have read it completely. Whatever one may say ...Twain brings up some of the most compelling arguments that any truth seeker needs to inquire. Shakespeare is an enigma. Twain addresses one William Shakser, born a commoner and for the first 22 years remained in Stratford upon Avon. He was not known to own any books, received minimal education, basically illiterate...yet is ascribed to have written some of the most profoundly excellent English literature, sonnets, plays. Twain leans toward Sir Francis Bacon, this writer believes it may have been produced by a number of ghost writers of the literary guild drawing from the expertise, knowledge of the Elizabethan I court, languages, and travels of several gifted men. There are other books on the subject, and these are very informative as well.
Great introduction to the subject
Fabulous! Follow up with, Edward DeeVere the 17th Earl of Oxford, Shakespeare by a another name.
Twain and Shakespeare
Phenomenally funny satire arguing why Shakespeare could not have authored all he was accredited to have written. Great reading! Thought provoking. Loved every page of it.
... Stratford couldn't have written the Shakespeare canon told with great, good-humor
Priceless summary of why the man from Stratford couldn't have written the Shakespeare canon told with great, good-humor.
