I left chicken curry out for three weeks on purpose — a controlled decomposition science project to see exactly what mold, maggots, and microscopic life look like under a professional microscope. What I found wasn't just rotting food: it was a fully functioning biological ecosystem operating in plain sight.
This investigation examines three distinct samples from the same batch: the mold colony developing on the surface, the fly larvae colonizing the protein layer, and the dark liquid pooled underneath. Each sample was examined at 40x, 100x, and 400x magnification revealing a layered decomposition system from fungal architecture down to live bacterial colonies.
The mold wasn't just surface discoloration. At 400x, a dense mycelial matrix was clearly visible — threadlike fungal hyphae extending in all directions with sporangia releasing spores into the surrounding moisture layer. This is the infrastructure of decomposition: a fungal network engineered to break complex organic compounds down to their most basic molecular components.
The liquid beneath the mold told the most unsettling story. Microorganisms navigating the protein-rich medium, and early-stage biofilm forming on suspended organic particles. The maggots weren't just decomposers. They were incubators, creating the precise conditions of temperature, moisture, and enzyme activity that microscopic life needs to thrive.
