One does not have to be an contractor, plumber, or an  electrician to discover a problem in a house. When something does not work, or we hear or see something out of the norm in your house, we start investigating on our own. Once we discover there is a real problem and if we have experience or knowledge; we attempt to fix it or call for an expert in the field in our community.
