Focusing on yourself is usually a good thing. Introspection brings awareness and room for improvement. But when does focusing on yourself too much become selfish? Is being detached and not expecting your relationship to last a good approach to prevent yourself from being disappointed? If so, what is the cost of this extra protection? Is it possible that we may be robbing ourselves of what a true relationship can offer if we start off by not trusting the other side or expecting a personal relationship to simply be a business transaction? If we are willing to flake on dates last minute rather than not agree to go on the date in the first place, does that mean we are too selfish or is that a display of virtue by choosing yourself first?
