Isaiah 17-20: Mercy in Judgement

Listen Later

Who truly rules this chaotic world? When nations clash and powers rise and fall, where can we find security? The ancient prophet Isaiah confronted these timeless questions with oracles that reveal a startling truth: beneath the tumult of world events lies the quiet sovereignty of God.

Following a moving testimony of a new church member experiencing his first annual meeting, we journey through Isaiah chapters 17-20, exploring God's dealings with the nations of Isaiah's day. Like Martin Lloyd-Jones preaching while bombs fell on Westminster Chapel during WWII, these passages demonstrate that God remains enthroned even when chaos seems to reign.

The prophet unveils God's sovereignty through judgment as mighty empires—Aram, Israel, Cush, and Egypt—fall under divine rebuke. With vivid imagery, Isaiah portrays these powers as roaring seas that God calms with a mere word, leaving them scattered "like chaff before the wind." Those who forget "the God of their salvation" and "the Rock of their strength" find their investments yielding nothing but emptiness.

Yet remarkably, these same chapters reveal God's sovereignty through salvation. In a breathtaking vision, Isaiah foresees Egypt and Assyria—Israel's fiercest enemies—becoming worshipers of the true God. Former oppressors cry out for deliverance, learn the language of faith, and join with Israel in a "triple alliance" of worship. God astoundingly declares, "Egypt my people, Assyria my handiwork, Israel my inheritance are blessed."

This message offers profound hope: if God can transform Egypt and Assyria, no one stands beyond the reach of divine grace. As Spurgeon beautifully expressed, "The devil can't color a soul so red in sin that the blood of Christ can't make it white as snow." Through Jesus, the blessing promised to Abraham reaches all nations, bringing former enemies together under one Lord.

Join us as we discover the God who remains quietly sovereign while kingdoms rise and fall—and whose grace can transform the fiercest foe into family. In a world of uncertainty, find unshakable security in the One whose name stands when all others fade.
