Isaiah/Part Two: Under God's Hand

Listen Later

                                       Isaiah/Part Two:

 “Under God’s Hand”
                                         Isaiah 10:5-19

  • Paradox: Two truths that run side-by-side that seem contradictory.
  • At this point we come face to face with the biblical paradox: the Lord is sovereign, but his instruments are morally responsible agents. Acts 2:23
  •  Responsibility: James 3:1

Three facts to this Paradox:

1.   God’s Sovereignty/Assyria’s Intention

  •  Woe forms a link with Isaiah 10:1
  •  Israel’s God was recognized as powerful: Joshua 2:10-11
  •  Israel is more godless because they had been given the light; thus, they were
accountable as God’s stewards of the Kingdom: Luke 12:48
  • Assyria’s evil intention is a heart problem: Isaiah 10:7 (ESV)
  • Evil is always a heart problem: Isaiah 9:9

2.   God’s Sovereignty/Assyria’s Responsibility

  • All will be accountable for their pride and arrogance: Isaiah 2:11,17
  •  Remember how we started: Isaiah 10:5

3.    God’s Sovereignty/Assyria’s Destruction

  •  Isaiah starts with just who God is and the consequences of recognizing His rule: Isaiah 5:24
  • All of this was fulfilled between 612-605—the Fall of Nineveh and the Battle of Carchemish: Isaiah 37:36
