A native of Chicago's West Side, Thomas has long felt invested in his city and the people in it, in this excerpt from his conversation Thomas speaks in a wide-ranging fashion on the power of successful depictions of black American life and how we have to maintain an array of those depictions in order to fight against narrow and depressed thinking that arguably hinders many in poor urban communities today.
