David was a complicated and flawed man, yet his life shows one consistent habit: before he moved, he asked God. He asked when others were afraid (Keilah in 1 Samuel 23), when everything fell apart (Ziklag in 1 Samuel 30), when victory seemed assured (Hebron in 2 Samuel 2), and when the battle looked the same as last time (the balsam trees in 2 Samuel 5).

The disasters in his life, Bathsheba and the census, came in the moments he skipped that habit.
