"It Is Finished" Sunday Morning March 15th

Listen Later

This profound exploration of John 19:16-30 takes us to the very heart of our faith: the crucifixion of Christ. We're reminded that this wasn't a scene of chaos and random violence, but rather the fulfillment of God's redemptive plan, orchestrated with divine precision. Three powerful themes emerge from this passage that challenge us deeply. First, we see Christ's kingship on full display, even in His humiliation. While religious leaders, Roman authorities, and crowds rejected Him, one criminal recognized Jesus as King and simply asked to be remembered. This teaches us that salvation isn't about our social standing or religious performance, but about recognizing our sinfulness and casting ourselves on Christ's mercy with a repentant heart. Second, we witness the remarkable fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy in every detail, from the division of His garments to His cry of thirst. This wasn't coincidence but confirmation that Jesus was in complete control, willingly fulfilling all righteousness. Finally, we encounter the astounding love of Christ, who even in excruciating pain cared for His vulnerable mother and completed redemption's plan. When Jesus cried 'It is finished,' He proclaimed that our salvation is complete. We cannot add to it through our efforts. This challenges us to stop trying to earn God's favor and simply rest in the finished work of Christ.
