Arizona public universities ban TikTok on school-managed devices
Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University and the University of Arizona have limited access to TikTok on university-managed devices, school officials said.
The move follows a recent executive order from President Joe Biden that gave federal agencies and contractors 30 days to remove the app on government-issued devices. As federal contractors, ASU, NAU and UA are joining a host of schools across the country in banning the popular, video-focused social media app.
ASU's policy banning TikTok access took effect Monday, ASU spokesperson Veronica Sanchez said. ASU community members, including students, will still be able to access the app on personal devices, she said.
NAU is also removing the app from all university-owned devices, NAU spokesperson Kimberly Ott said.
The University of Arizona "is already in full compliance with the Biden Administration's guidance and is working to block TikTok from university-owned personal computing devices," said UA spokesperson Nick Prevenas.
ASU is also eliminating its official TikTok account, @arizonastateuniversity, which has roughly 5,500 followers, Sanchez said.
State and federal lawmakers have raised concerns in recent months that TikTok, which is owned by Chinese conglomerate ByteDance, could pose a security risk. They've argued that the company could be giving user data to the Chinese government and pushing pro-China narratives through the app, even as TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew sought to assure officials during a March 23 congressional hearing that the platform would not turn over user data if asked.
Universities outside Arizona that have taken action against the app include Auburn University in Alabama, the University of Oklahoma, the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University. All have banned the app from university-owned devices and Wi-Fi networks.
