Ithaca Minute – Pizza robbery arrest, Hairspray auditions at IHS
Here’s the Ithaca Minute from 14850 Today for March 1st.
A man who Ithaca Police say was responsible for Monday night’s armed robbery of a pizza delivery driver was arrested Tuesday night after barricading himself in a home on west hill, according to IPD. 25-year-old Dennis Noonan was secured in police custody “after several hours” barricaded in his apartment.
Police say after the suspect was taken into custody, “officers observed what appeared to be evidence of a small meth lab inside of an apartment,” and IPD secured the scene to await the New York State Police contaminated crime scene emergency response team.
Noonan was charged with robbery in the second degree.
Several weeks after controversy erupted over Ithaca High School’s plans for a spring musical, a new production is in the works. “Hairspray” will open on April 13th.
Early in January, students expressed concern over the casting of Esmeralda in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” saying the role called for a student of color, but a white student had been selected. Ultimately, the tense topic resulted in the cancellation of the spring musical, and widespread national media coverage generated racially motivated online abuse for students and other community members.
“Hairspray tells the story of young people who identify a racial and social injustice that they are experiencing,” says Joey Steinhagen of Running to Places in talking about the production, which he’ll direct. Auditions are next week, and there’s an informational meeting this Thursday after school, with practice sessions after school on Friday and Monday where students can learn the audition music.
