What is the driving force that pushes elite performers to accomplish great things? I think we can all agree that the standard response to that question is motivation – these people are "motivated" to get up early, they're "motivated" to work hard or they're "motivated" to accomplish their dreams. But is this really the case, or have we simply misdiagnosed the true driver for a lifestyle of habitual success?

Whenever someone speaks out with a viewpoint opposing the masses I get excited. I love contrarians and respect their courage to challenge the status quo, and this particular subject touches on something near and dear to me.

Mel Robbins is a renowned speaker, television host and author and when I came across an interview she did called "why motivation is garbage", I had to share some of her key takeaways here on the Shot.

Mel points out, "That's what it takes to get what you want. Not big scary leaps once a year. It takes small, but irritating moves every single day."

I think a lot of us have fallen into a false sense of understanding that the road to greatness comes down to only a few major moments for which we have to muster up everything we have to take the plunge. However, Robbin's perspective points out an entirely different mentality – it is these daily occurrences of uncomfortable moments and experiences that we muster up the courage to do the things others won't. Every day leader's step out of our comfort zones, constantly immersed in a state of discomfort for doing things we do not want to do in the immediate but knowing will benefit us in the long-term. That way when major moments do present themselves, and they will, having practiced as we will play, these major opportunities become far less intimidating to those of us who've challenged our personal limitations on a daily basis than those that waited on the sidelines for the "perfect moment" to finally get in the game. Or as Mel puts it so eloquently, "You are never going to feel like it." "That's the problem with so many adults; we're all focused on getting it perfect instead of trying. What ever happened to good enough?"

Now is good enough. Right now we have everything we need to try, so today that's what I intend on doing. Today I am going to do one thing that makes me uncomfortable. I don't know what that something will be, but when it comes up I'm going to go for it. I will be vigilant as I go through my day and when something triggers me to feel uncomfortable or hesitant to try I am going to jump in full force. What do I have to lose besides my fear of trying? It leads me back to my favorite quote, "remembering you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart." – Steve Jobs

Let's go get uncomfortable.
