As a society, the idea we have about burnout is all wrong and it’s hurting both younger generations who are new in the workforce as well as those who are trying to manage them.
I’m going to tell you burnout is NOT caused by working hard, or by working long hours. Never has been. Never will be.
What really is burnout?
Burnout is a feeling of profound disconnection from your work and its value. And it’s this disconnection that leads to a specific kind of stress. There are several key factors that lead to this: Missing the meaning of your work, a lack of control, unclear job expectations, extremes of activity, and lack of social support.
