Japanese General Kuribayashi transformed the island into a fortified stronghold, utilizing kamikaze tactics as desperation rose due to air superiority losses.

On February 21, 1945, the USS Bismarck Sea was sunk following kamikaze attacks, resulting in significant casualties, including the loss of noted hero Doris Miller.

The USS Saratoga survived but suffered heavy damage and losses.
