In the latest episode of The IWD406 Podcast, our guest is Hannah Plumb.
"Thirty-one years ago, I packed a few bags, books, and albums into my little Toyota Tercel and waved goodbye to traffic jams, drive by shootings, and serious humidity. It was winter in New Jersey as I drove down the turnpike but winter was about to get real and start with a capital “W” by the end of my journey. Four days later and a lot of white-knuckling and questioning my big dream, I arrived in Whitefish, Montana and declared it home.
Like many of us making a start in this corner of the world, I wore many hats to make a living… graphic designer, concierge, bookstore owner, dog walker, gardener, construction worker, and many things in between. I learned to fly fish and cross-country ski. I had my first taste of antelope and have become proficient at starting a fire. After all these years, my family back East still shake their heads in wonder; confounded…. -40 degrees? A moose running down the road? Grizzly bears in your yard? You heat by woodstove?"
Hanna Plumb came to Montana in search of wide open spaces and a life filled with community, big landscape, and an opportunity to grow in new ways. She has been working as the Development Coordinator for the Flathead Youth Home.
Her life has become a investment in young people. When she began this journey, She did not know that her heart would be broken and changed by a twelve year old girl addicted to meth, or that she would meet a boy who would grow into a man that she is proud to call friend or that she would bear witness to some of the most resilient and courageous young souls that inspire her every day.
Our world feels hard these days. Broken in ways she is not sure will ever fully heal. But she has seen enough healing that gives her hope. She has encountered a beauty in this world that compels her to keep investing in the people and places she has grown to love.
Over the years, Hannah has gathered quotes and poems and lines from songs and tucked them away for future encouragement, inspiration, and celebration. A favorite quote by Rumi, is one she tries to live by daily ,
“Be a lamp, or a lifeboat, or a ladder. Help Someone’s soul heal. [Rumi]
That is Hannah's life investment and inspiration – that her life is part of helping, healing, help, and hope.
