Comedian, actor, writer, and musical artist Jaboukie was already a fan of The Drums when their second album was released, but Portamento was the project that solidified his relationship with the band. Singer Jonny Pierce had just come out publicly and Jaboukie immediately saw the connection between Pierce's queerness and Portamento's thematic landscape. He was drawn to the vulnerable honesty in the lyrics and his high school years were powered by its sparse, beachy sound.
