Jack of the Dancing Flames

Listen Later

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!!

As the days get shorter and the barrier between worlds weakens, we investigate symbols of light in darkness: from the headless horseman to jack-o'-lanterns and will-o'-the-wisps; this episode reveals their deep folklore and cultural ties. Listeners will discover the origins of the jack-o'-lantern, from Celtic customs to its place as a Halloween tradition, originally carved from turnips to keep away spirits during Samhain and the symbolically disparate ideas of lanterns that call to ancestors across Asia and Latin America. Also explore the ties to will-o'-the-wisps, strange lights that mislead travellers and inspire legends about spirit guides, and the mischievous tricksters that lead to your doom.
