Jacob had family of origin issues. As such, from an early age, he learned to lie and scheme his way through life and gained the reputation of saying whatever he needed to say in order to save his own skin and get ahead. Many of us have similar trust issues. We want to do what’s right; but, when backed into a corner, we’ll default to self-preservation and turf protection, rather than trusting God and doing what’s right. But sooner or later, we discover that all our scheming and struggling is really a struggle against God. So it was for Jacob. In the end, he learned the painful lesson that fighting God is fruitless. It’s only when we allow Him to give us a new identity and submit to His will for our lives that we are truly blessed.
