Then COVID hit and rewrote his beat entirely, sending him to wildfires and, eventually, to the Oakland protests following the murder of George Floyd. What followed was one of the most psychologically disorienting stretches of his career, and what it taught him about the limits of journalistic distance when the unfamiliar shows up in your own backyard.
