Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jamaican Jazz Piano Legend Monty Alexander .. We elaborated on his latest 2019 CD Wareika Hill – covering the classic Thelonis Monk album and refers to a place in Jamaica where Rastafarian musicians used to gather located behind Monty's childhood home outside of Kingston. He looked at that hill quite a bit growing up .. 2019 is also a banner year in honor of celebrating his 75th birthday and six professional decades in the music industry – and he also got an honorary Doctorate from the University of the West Indies and was the a recipient of the Commander of Distinction title from Jamaican Prime Minister P.J. Patterson. Over time, he has played with the likes of Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Milt Jackson, Sonny Rollins and Clark Terry, but it was after his family moved to Miami, Florida, in 1961, where he played in various nightclubs and got attention of Frank Sinatra who flew him to New York ..
