James 1:13-15

James 1:13-15

Why is it we are so prone to blame God when things are difficult, especially when we’re tempted, especially when we fall? James tells us that God cannot be tempted with evil and that God does not tempt anyone, James chapter 1 verse 13. And then he warns us about temptation and sin. “But every man is tempted, [says James] when he is drawn away of his own lust, and is enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, [full grown] bringeth forth death.”

Now do you see the stages in this experience? First there is deception. Now God doesn’t deceive people, Satan is the deceiver. He’s drawn away of his own lust and enticed. The word “drawn away” is a word that means a trap that is baited. Of course the animal doesn’t see the trap, the animal sees the bait. The word “enticed” speaks about a hook that is baited. Along comes the fish and the fish doesn’t see the hook, the fish sees the bait. You see the devil knows how to use deception. A temptation is the devil’s substitute for what God wants to give you.

Now when God gives you something there’s a price to pay. When Satan gives you something he says, “It’s free, come and enjoy it!” Ah, but then there’s the hook. First there’s deception, then there’s desire, he’s drawn away of his own lust. These desires within us can be perverted. Now there’s nothing wrong with the normal desires of life God made them, ah but Satan wants to use those desires to lead us astray.

Then there’s disobedience “When lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin:” The picture now is that of pregnancy. Sin is born through disobedience and what’s the result? Well, sin is born with death. “And sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” You know sometimes it takes time for that little baby to grow up and bring death. But you can be sure of this, “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).

What should we do to overcome temptation? Watch out for that deception, keep your desires focused on the Lord and remember the hook is always there when the devil is there to entice you.
