James 1:19-21
The way you and I receive the Word of God will pretty much determine how we are going to live. This is why we read in James chapter 1 verse 19, “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:” James then goes on to tell us that we should receive with meekness the implanted Word of God. Notice now these instructions. Here we are going off to church or here we are opening the Bible for our private devotional time. Or perhaps we’re seated at the table with our family and we’re going to have our family prayer time.
How do we respond to the Word of God? Number one, be swift to hear; hearing the Word of God. Why is it important to hear the Word of God and why should we be quick to hear the Word of God? “Because faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.” Jesus said “Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.” Take heed that you hear, listen to the Word of God.
Secondly He said “Take heed what you hear” and He also said, “Take heed how you hear.” It takes attention to have retention. If we’re going to read the Word of God and hear the Word of God we’ve got to focus our attention on it. We must be swift to hear.
Secondly, slow to speak. We have two ears and one mouth we ought to listen twice as much as we talk. There’s something about us that makes us want to talk right away. We want to explain, we want to excuse or argue. He says no, be slow to speak, ponder, meditate, turn the Word of God over in your heart. Receive with meekness, not with anger, receive with meekness that implanted Word and let it work in your heart.
Thirdly, he said we should not only be swift to hear and slow to speak but slow to get angry, why? Verse 20 tells us, “The wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.” Oh you say “I’m going to get angry, I’ll let them have it!” No, you won’t; if you do it won’t work the righteousness of God. Slow to get angry, especially we must be careful not to get angry with God. We read the Word of God it convicts us, we get angry like David got angry and then we find out we better confess our sins. If God is going to work in our lives we must be swift to hear, slow to speak and slow to get angry.
