James 1:5-8
What is the most important thing that you and I need when we are going through the trials of life? Someone says, “Oh Lord, I need strength.” Well, what would you do with that strength? “Oh Lord, I need grace.” What would you do with that grace? “Oh God, I need power.” What would you do with that power?
No, James 1:5 tells us that our greatest need is wisdom. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not;” He doesn’t scold and it shall be given him. “But let him ask in faith.” James keeps bringing up faith, doesn’t he? “Let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”
Wisdom is our greatest need when we are going through the trials of life, why? Well to begin with we need wisdom not to waste all of our suffering. I think in the Christian life we waste suffering more than perhaps anything else; suffering and opportunities to grow. We need wisdom not to waste the suffering we’re going through. What a tragedy it would be to waste an opportunity for growth. Stop and consider the high cost of wasted trials.
Secondly, we need wisdom to understand God’s purposes. Now God doesn’t always explain His purposes, but as we walk with the Lord, as we read His word and fellowship with Him, we see certain things happening and we say, “Praise the Lord, I can see what God is doing.”
Thirdly, we need wisdom to understand the word of God; that we might grow in grace and in faith. “Let him ask in faith nothing wavering.” It is wisdom that keeps us from wavering. The person who lacks the wisdom of God is going to be running from one thing to another, one place to another looking for some kind of an escape. Double minded, on the one hand praying and trusting the Lord, on the other hand running around and trusting in his own plans. Yes we need wisdom. Ask God for wisdom. Wisdom is the right use of knowledge, ask God for wisdom. He’ll give it to you and He won’t scold you.
