James 2:8-13

James 2:8-13

It is amazing how many people think that they can be saved simply by keeping some law. And yet James 2:10 tells us, “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.” Now James is not telling us we are saved by keeping a law, James knows that we are saved by the grace of God. We’re saved by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. In fact he pictured the law in chapter 1 as a mirror. The law is a mirror that reveals our sin to us. When you look into a mirror and see that your face is dirty, you don’t wash your face in the mirror you wash your face with water. Well, when we look into the Word of God and see how sinful we are, we turn to the Lord Jesus Christ who died for us and He cleanses us by His blood.

It’s interesting to note that James gives two very special names to the law of God. James chapter 2 verse 8, “But if ye fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well:” And then in verse 12, “So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.”

The royal law, what is the royal law? The law of love; why does James call the law of love the royal law? Well it was given by the king to begin with, our Lord said, “A new commandment I give unto you, that you shall love one another;” (John 13:34). This is the royal law. It came from the king and it makes a king out of you. You see people who live by love are also living by law, because love is the fulfillment of the law. When we live by love we don’t want to hurt people. You take any of God’s commandments and measure those commandments by love and you discover that love is the fulfillment of the law. When you love people you don’t want to murder, you don’t want to steal; you don’t want to hurt their reputation.

Why does James call the law the law of liberty? Because love sets you free, you aren’t under bondage to rules and regulations; you’re living by the beautiful power of love that set you free. It is well been said that “The purpose of life is not to find your freedom, it’s to find your master and when Christ and love master you, you are free.”
