James 5:14-16

James 5:14-16

“Confess your faults one to another, pray for one another, that you may be healed.” This commandment is given in James 5:16 and it’s a commandment that we need to understand and obey. “Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; let them pray over him, anointing him with oil, in the name of the Lord: and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he has committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.” And then we have this word, “Confess your faults therefore one to another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man aveileth much.”

Now he’s telling us here there’s a definite connection between sin and sickness. I’m not saying all sickness comes from sin, no. What I’m saying is that sin sometimes leads to sickness; naturally, just by disobeying the Word of God, we disobey the laws of health and we get sick! But sometimes it’s discipline from God. Paul wrote to the Corinthians and said, “For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and some have gone to sleep” (1 Corinthians 11:30). They’ve died. God sometimes sends sickness as discipline.

Secondly, the way we live affects the church. Here is a Christian apparently who disobeyed the Lord and God sent the discipline of sickness and he had to call the church and confess his sins. Our sins affect others.

Thirdly, when we confess our sins to God, if our sins have touched the lives of others we should also confess them to others. I’ve often taught in my ministry we should always confess sin in the sphere of its influence. If you’ve sinned against your wife you confess it to your wife. If you’ve sinned against the church you confess it to the church.

Would you notice here that God’s people can pray for one another? “Let them pray over him … and the prayer of faith shall save the sick,” (vv. 14-15). He is telling us here that when we are honest with God, honest with each other and when we pray for one another, God will go to work. Again this does not mean that every sickness comes from sin, nor does it mean that prayer will heal every sickness. What he is saying is do what God wants you to do, leave it with Him. And God will use this experience for your good and for His glory and for the building of the Church.
