James 5:19-20

One of the greatest dangers in the Christian life is the deadly danger of drifting, of wandering. We read in James 5:19-20, “Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, [that means wander from the truth] and one convert him; let him know, that he who converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.”

What’s he talking about? He’s saying that Christians need to be converted. You see to be converted means to “be turned around,” “to change direction.” Here is a Christian who starts to get out of the will of God. How does he do this? He wanders from the truth. Doesn’t say he wanders from the church; there are people sitting in church who have wandered from the truth. To wander from the truth means to neglect the Bible, to say, “Well, the Bible doesn’t really mean that. I know this is what it says about stealing or lying or adultery, but that applied to David. It doesn’t apply to me.”

You start wandering from the truth and before long you are in error. “Let him know, that he that converteth the sinner from the error of his way…” Wandering then leads to error. You start believing lies and before long you’re walking down the road that leads to death. “He that converts the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death,” there is a sin unto death! You say, “Do you mean that God would allow a believer to be killed?” Well, God doesn’t do this every day, but I read in my Bible about Achan and about Saul and about Sampson and about Ananias and Sapphira; people whose lives were taken because they wandered from the truth.

It’s important for us to convert saints as well as to convert sinners. It’s important for us to help that wandering believer to come back to the fold again.

How do we do this? Well of course we pray, we don’t judge we don’t act like judges, we pray, we watch, we wait, we ask God to give us the opportunity and then we seek to take them lovingly by the hand and bring them back to the truth. And when you bring someone back to the truth you’ve saved that soul from death and you’ve covered a multitude of sins.
