James 5:7-8

“Be ye also patient; establish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth near.” We read these words in James chapter 5 verse 8. In fact in verses 7 and 8, three times James talks about patience and patience is something that all of us need.

Now the word he uses doesn’t mean sitting around waiting, doing nothing. It’s not the patience of grandmother in the rocking chair as she rocks away waiting for the mail to come. No, it’s the word for endurance in difficulty, it’s the word that means the runner going down the race track and he keeps on going, though the going is tough. It’s the soldier out there on the battle field who would like to be behind the lines; but there he is and he just keeps on going. He’s talking about a life of endurance.

Now what’s the motivation behind the life of endurance? The coming of the Lord is drawing near. You see the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is not an escape. The coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is a motivation to keep on enduring. It’s not a pie in the sky, by and by therefore sit around and do nothing. No, James is saying be like the farmer, “Be patient therefore, brethren, under the coming of the Lord. Behold, the farmer [What can we learn from a farmer? Well,] “Behold, the farmer waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and have long patience for it, until he received the early and later rain.” He can’t get the blessing until heaven sends it.

Now we should be patient like the farmer. He prepares the soil, he sows the seed, he waters the seed, God sends the rain, he has to wait for the harvest. You and I are like that farmer, we’re going through life sowing, we’re going through life sowing seeds of the blessing or seeds of judgement. What are you sowing today, what will you reap? Well, you’ll reap what you sow. The important idea here is simply to have an established heart that leads to a life of endurance. If your heart is fixed on yourself, on others, or on the world, you’re going to give up. If your heart is fixed on the Lord and you’re looking for that future coming of the Lord, the harvest when the grain shall come forth, then you’re going to endure. It’s always too soon to quit. When you feel like quitting just remember the coming of the Lord is near.
