James 5:9

Listen Later

James 5:9

“Murmur not one against another, brethren, lest you be judged: behold, the judge standeth before the door.” James wrote those words to some Christians who needed patience. Now all of us need patience, we need to be patient with the Lord and wait for His will to be worked out in our lives. James talked about that in James 5:7-8. He said, “Be patient unto the coming of the Lord.” Be patient with the Lord, now he’s saying be patient with one another. Oh, how we need to be patient with one another.

You see Christians are human and one trait of humanity is impatience. It takes a diamond to cut a diamond; it takes a Christian to hurt a Christian. If an unsaved person said or did things that Christians would do that would hurt us, we’d say, “Well he’s unsaved, he doesn’t know the Lord, I’ll just pray for him.” But let a Christian do that and we get hurt.

He’s saying here, now, don’t complain to one another, don’t murmur against one another, you’re just asking for judgement. He’s talking her about complaining and criticizing. Now there is room in the Christian life for honest judgement. Ephesians 4:15 tells us “to speak the truth in love.” Be sure you speak the truth in love and be sure it is in love that you do it. There is room for honest evaluation and honest criticism, but James is talking about malicious attacks on one another, the murmuring and complaining, the kind of thing that Moses went through with the people of Israel.

I’m sure you’ve noticed when you’ve read your Old Testament Scriptures that Moses was repeatedly bearing the burden of a complaining people. They complained about the way he lead them, they complained about the way he feed them, they complained about God’s providences and sometimes God had to judge them.

Why should we avoid complaining against one another? Well number one, you’re only judging yourself. Jesus said the same thing, “Judge not, that ye be not judged” (Matthew 7:1). Number two, the Judge is standing before the door, don’t be caught doing anything you shouldn’t be doing when the Lord Jesus Christ comes again. Yes, we need to be patient with the Lord and yes; we need to be patient with one another. And the Holy Spirit of God through Christ our Savior can give us the patience that we need.
