In 1881, James A. Garfield became the second American president to be assassinated. American inventor Alexander Graham Bell was asked to bring his newest invention, the metal detector, to the White House to see if it could pinpoint the location of the bullet in the president's body.

 

But every attempt failed - the new invention producing only static.

 

Years later, it was learned that the failure was not due to a faulty invention... but to something very close to the president.
