James Baldwin was an American writer who challenged the status quo for race relations in the 20th Century.  His poetry, books, and commentary gave voice especially to the millions of African Americans who were stuck in the segregated US South with it's Jim Crow attitudes and practices - not to mention the de facto segregation that affected the whole United States.  One needs only review the interview James Baldwin gave on the Dick Cavett show in 1969 to see his impact.  Basically, Jimmy Baldwin sums it up saying, "I don't want to be given anything by you, I just want to be left alone so I can do it myself"  He is considered a HOSS indeed!
