My Fellow Americans: The Inaugural Addresses of the U.S. Presidents

James Buchanan's Inaugural Address - 03/04/1857 - Read by Yuvraj Singh

Listen Later

James Buchanan delivered inaugural address on March 4th, 1857. Read by Yuvraj Singh. Buchanan is perhaps best known for being the president immediately before Abraham Lincoln. Considered one of the lower ranked presidents, Buchanan is often compared to his successor. He supported the Dred Scott which held that American citizenship was not meant for Black people, whether enslaved or free – and so the rights provided by the Constitution did not apply to them (the decision is widely considered to be one of, if not the, worst Supreme Court decision).

The cover art is an 1859 portrait of James Buchanan by George Peter Alexander Healy.
