James retired from sporting life after his historic victory in The Gollymockey Chase in June ‘78. Flies Ryanair in memory of Cathal Ryan who was hauled out of mass one Sunday for messing by his father, the TC. James pursued a career in mental health, addiction treatment services and criminal justice as a nurse then social worker.
