We talk with Jamie Valvano, the daughter of Jim Valvano (Jimmy "V"), the legendary head basketball coach at North Carolina State University, as she explains her role as a crucial part of the caregiving team for her father as he battled terminal cancer.
Jamie proudly describes how her Dad established The V Foundation for Cancer Research and her own interaction with the foundation today.
Jamie will also share the emotional story of discovering her second son had suffered a stroke in utero. She recounts the personal struggles she faced being a mother of a child with special needs as she mistakenly thought she needed to “fix” her precious son.
At the young age of 33, Jamie was diagnosed with breast cancer as a direct result of inheriting the BRCA 2 genetic mutation from her father. Overcoming the life changing circumstances associated with battling cancer allowed her to gain personal insights that brought about significant transformation.
Jamie talks openly about her ongoing advocacy and the impact she strives to make every day as a caregiver, mother and a survivor.
