Before this episode, I’d never heard of Janteloven.
It’s an unwritten Norwegian social code that says you shouldn’t think you’re better than anyone else. I discovered it while chatting to a group of Norway fans in Brooklyn, and what followed became one of my favourite conversations of the entire World Cup.
We start with football, but quickly end up talking about national identity, why Norwegians love America’s larger-than-life characters, the rivalry with Sweden, Erling Haaland, Brazil, baseball, Viking confidence and what it’s really like to be Norwegian.
It’s funny, thoughtful and completely unexpected – one of my favourite encounters so far!
