January 10th is National Bittersweet Chocolate Day! But here's the sweet part – bittersweet chocolate was actually discovered by accident! Ancient Aztecs would ferment cacao beans to make drinks, and one day someone discovered that the fermented beans made a more complex, less sweet flavor. Today, true bittersweet chocolate must contain at least 35% pure chocolate!
On January 10th, 1946, the first radar contact with the moon was made! The U.S. Army bounced radio signals off the lunar surface and received them back on Earth 2.4 seconds later. Talk about a long-distance call!
Today is also National Save the Eagles Day! When this day was first established in 1975, there were only about 417 nesting pairs of bald eagles left in the lower 48 states. Today, thanks to conservation efforts, there are over 316,700! Now that's what I call a comeback story!
Want to hear something incredible? On this day in 1863, the world's first underground railway opened in London! The Metropolitan line was just 3.75 miles long and was built using the 'cut and cover' method – basically digging a huge trench and covering it up. Today, the London Underground carries 5 million passengers every day!
Today is National Houseplant Appreciation Day! But did you know that houseplants didn't become popular until the Victorian era? People thought keeping plants indoors was impossible until physician Nathaniel Ward accidentally discovered that plants could thrive in sealed glass containers in 1829!
