January 23: Psalm 63 and 64, Jeremiah 22, and 1 Corinthians 7

There is a LOT going on in this passage, and Paul almost seems to crisscross himself. Sometimes he seems to be a hardcore defender of marriage, other times he seems to hate it. Several things are key in this passage. One, the first sentence: “the matters you wrote about.” This is only half the conversation, Paul is answering their questions. We’re only getting one side of this conversation, so we must remember that. Two: an important section of this verse is is near the end, where Paul says “live in a right way, in undivided devotion to the Lord.” And point three: Corinth was a city noted for its sexual immorality, so Paul may have just been trying to educate them how to act like basic, decent people. The “devotion to the Lord” to which he was challenging them was, at the basic level, the summary of how people in such a free-loving town should act if they are servants of Christ, and the rest of this is certainly the detailed explanation of that call. And all in all, it is the way we follow Jesus that should remain our focus.
