Jesus Appears—Epiphany Sunday celebrates God’s gracious revealing of his Son as the Savior of the world. The word epiphany means “appearing” or “making known.” On this day, we remember how God led the Magi by the star to see and worship the newborn King. Through this event, God showed that Jesus did not come only for Israel, but for all nations.
Epiphany officially is celebrated on January 6, thus the days between Christmas and Epiphany are called, “the twelve days of Christmas.”
The Savior of the Nations—Our theme, “Jesus Appears as the Savior of the Nations,” highlights this beautiful truth of the gospel: in Christ, God has provided salvation for every people and every place. The Magi, Gentiles from far away, are among the first to see and believe that this child is the promised Savior. During the Epiphany season, we rejoice that Jesus reveals himself through Word and Sacrament and continues to draw people from all nations to saving faith. As we worship today, we give thanks that the light of Christ has also shined into our hearts and sends us to reflect his saving love to the world.
