January Panel Episode 1
We’ve got some awesome experience here today. Physician, Nurse, PA, paramedic and EMT!
We introduce Sarah, 9 year nurse with 4 years of experience in the ER. She is inspired by the team mentality in the ED as well as the unique situations. Inspired by her grandmother who was a nurse when emergency medicine was a developing specialty.
We welcome back Casey. Long time, experienced paramedic, practicing here for 30 years.
Nate is back. EMT for 9 years. Comes from a heavy past with suicide attempts, drug and alcohol abuse and has a passion for helping those in similar situations.
We welcome Doug, emergency medicine physician of 24 years. His love for science lead to him pursuing medicine and ultimately emergency medicine.
We talk about how medicine ends up so ingrained in you that doing something different really becomes impossible at a certain point.
I may have gotten myself stuck in a bathroom during a night and had to be saved by the lock picking abilities of talented ER physician.
Failures in emergency medicine
I talk about my failure to diagnose a PE in a patient and how, fortunately, my physician college was able to find it and the patient did well. But I learned, if you think about ordering the test, just order it.
Casey talks about how he gave the wrong medicine. He talks about complacency and the danger that can present to a patient when we are not diligent. He talks about missing an MI and how these things do happen, even to experienced people.
