A bustling Canterbury tourist village is trialling being smoke-free.

Hanmer Springs is embarking on a voluntary six month smoking ban, after the idea was supported by 63 percent of businesses.

It means there will be smoke and vapefree zones, along with signs and promotions to encourage people to follow through.

Hurunui District councillor Jason Fletcher told Mike Hosking there is no point going around as dictators.

"When you travel around other parts of the world and see signs that say no smoking you simply follow it."
