Jason Gill is in his ninth season as head coach of the Loyola Marymount Lions. In his first eight seasons he has coached 43 All-West Coast Conference selections, four freshman All-Americans, and has had 24 players drafted into professional baseball. Gill’s college playing career began with two seasons at Cuesta College. He then spent his junior campaign at Cal State Dominguez Hills before deciding to transfer to Cal State Fullerton for his senior year. Despite being advised to not make the decision by then-Cal State Fullerton recruiting coordinator George Horton, Gill walked on and wound up becoming the starting third baseman on a Titan team that advanced to the College World Series. He later served as an assistant coach at the University of Nevada in 1997 and 1998 and Loyola Marymount in 1999 and 2000. A year later he joined forces with head coach John Savage to resurrect a dormant program at UC Irvine. After four years with the Anteaters, Gill returned to Cal State Fullerton for three years to work under head coach Augie Garrido before joining head coach George Horton in resurrecting the University of Oregon program. Upon accepting the offer at Loyola Marymount to return to the Los Angeles-area school as head coach, Gill faced the challenge of building the confidence in a program that struggled to be competitive. He achieved that feat quickly by guiding the Lions to a second place finish in the West Coast Conference in his first season. Two years ago he led the Lions to a 33-21-1 record before going 26-27 last year in the WCC. This year’s team is a bit inexperienced but holds considerable promise. The key, according to Gill, will be how his young pitching staff responds when facing talented opposing lineups. In addition to his efforts at Loyola Marymount, Gill also had the opportunity to serve as an assistant coach on the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team on two occasions.
