Jean-Jacques Cornish: South Africa may change constitution to speed up land seizures

Listen Later

The expropriation of land without compensation has begun in South Africa.
It started with a farmer who wanted the government to pay him 20 million for his land, they offered him two million.
When he refused they took it anyway.
71 per cent of farmland and 49 urban land is owned by whites.
South Africa Correspondent Jean-Jacques Cornish told Mike Hosking they want to change that.
"And they wanted to do 30 per cent by this time in the new dispensation since 94, so now they are going with this land expropriation without compensation."
Cornish told Mike Hosking only 10 per cent of land has changed since 1994, and now the government is considering changing the constitution to speed up the expropriation.
"The constitution provides for expropriation but they want to change the constitution to deal with it expressly."
Cornish says there's much debate on who should own land and how much.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa says it will cost between 500 and 700 billion rands to change the land.
