September 4, 2024 ~ Lucy Ann Lance talks with Jeanine Michna-Bales, Photographer. “Through Darkness to Light,” is on display at the Ypsilanti District Library’s Whitaker Branch. The project, developed from 2002 to 2016, delves into the journey of fugitive slaves on the Underground Railroad, blending fine art with meticulous historical research. McNab-Bales located various sites related to the Underground Railroad, despite their often secretive and undocumented nature, and ensured all stops were operational during the same period. Her work emphasizes the perspective of enslaved individuals, capturing their emotional landscape and the sensory experiences of their nighttime escapes.
