On this episode of Shaping Success with Wes Tankersley, Wes chats again with Jennifer Broxterman about her nutrition business Prosper Nutrition Coaching and engages us in a few games and metaphors to better understand how we can improve our habits with nutrition and life.
Jennifer loves to coach in metaphors, languages, and games. This helps clients stay motivated and make it fun.
She recaps the toothbrush metaphor from the last interview with Wes. When people forget to brush their teeth, they generally brush them as soon as they are able. People need to use this mindset when it comes to their nutrition. Just because someone makes a bad food choice, they should get back on track and not just give up. People don’t stop brushing their teeth altogether because they miss one day.
Jennifer has incorporated a pyramid to show how to be successful with nutrition and uses the toothbrush metaphor as an example of how it works. At the top of the pyramid is Habit, followed by Environment, and Mindset. To be successful with brushing teeth, people form the habit young. People make the environment favorable to be able to complete the task. For example, the toothbrush is easily accessible in the same place all the time. With food, people are unprepared and don’t create the best environment for success.
Jennifer says some coaches make the mistake of using cookie-cutter techniques and expecting all their clients to succeed with these techniques. If they don’t, it is their fault, and they are called lazy and uncooperative. Coaches need to realize what works for one person may not work for another.
There is a test one can use to determine if she is truly hungry or not. It’s called the Apple Test. A person will ask herself if she would eat an apple in this moment. If not, there’s another reason she wants to eat whether she just wants to taste something or there’s some other emotional reason.
She’s also developed a stress management coaching chart. The top tier is quick stress management that takes 1 to 5 minutes. The next tier is a deeper layer that also helps with love/connection, meditation, and journaling. The next tier helps with breath and calm, moving the body, and order and control.
