Comments on Jeremiah 18

The Lord showed Jeremiah a potter who was not happy with a pot he made, so the potter made a new pot with the clay. God said to Jeremiah, "Can't I do this with Israel? But if a nation turns from its sins, I will change my mind, and I will not tear it down.”

So Jeremiah brought a message from the Lord to all Judah and Jerusalem, calling them out for their sins, and told them that destruction was on the way.

But the people hated the message, and would not turn away from their sins.

In v. 18, the people said, "Come and let us hurt him (Jeremiah) with our tongue, and let us not listen to any of his words." So because they did not like Jeremiah's message, they wanted to silence him. Does that sound at all familiar?

What was Jeremiah’s response? Did he lash out at them? Did he take things into his own hands? No, he went to the Lord and prayed, "Do not forgive their wrong-doing or cover their sin from Your eyes. Let them be taken down before You. Punish them in the time of Your anger."

This is counter to the prayer that Jesus prayed on the cross. "Forgive them Lord, for they know not what they do."

Is there a time where it is right to pray Jeremiah's prayer? As we heard today in the chapters following chapter 18, the Lord's anger had been kindled toward Israel, and He did not rebuke Jeremiah.

Beloved, there will come a time when God will say, "Enough!" We look at the condition of the world today, and we wonder how much worse things can get. Maybe we’re getting close to that day, or maybe there will be a world wide revival, and people will turn to Him. It has happened before, and it can happen again. Only the Father knows. Only He knows the day and hour when He will be through, and the Great Tribulation will begin. Until that day, we…each of us… are called to carry the Good News of a Risen Christ to all who will listen. For those who do listen, their eternities will be forever changed. How wonderful for them, and how great it is to be the one who brought the message to them! We have a great opportunity and responsibility to allow God to use us bear the message of hope, love and Good News.
