In this episode of Next Level, I chat with Jessamyn Stanley, who is a true icon for body positivity and a world-renowned yoga teacher breaking all the yogi stereotypes. Jessamyn shares her journey from self-hate to self-love and gives you real-life advice for learning to accept your body.
My favorite point Jessamyn makes in this episode is: you should treat body shaming and self-hate as the addictions they are. She says, “I learned how to shame myself at a very young age, and I feel like I’m in a permanent state of recovery. It’s something I literally work on every day.”
Jessamyn makes it clear there is no quick fix solution when it comes to learning to love yourself and your body. There is no mantra to repeat, and there is no magic trick you can do. You need to put in the work. It’s unpleasant and not pretty to look at, but the results are beyond what you could ever imagine.
The first step towards rehabilitation is detaching from what others think about you and starting to focus on how you feel about you. Most often, why we fail to love ourselves is because of caring too much about what others think. We need to realize the people who judge us are projecting their insecurities onto us. We should never allow their insecurities to create insecurities within ourselves.
